EL PASO - Local radio legend Charlie Russell died of complications from prostate cancer at 8 a.m. today.

Russell, 73, was a veteran broadcaster and singer, best known for his 23-year stint as the popular morning show host on country radio station KHEY-AM (600).

"I know heaven has a hell of a new angel out there," Andrew Russell of Grapevine, Texas, said of his father, known for his good works in the community.

Russell was an account executive for Clear Channel Radio, which owns KHEY-AM and FM (96.3), at the time of his death.

The former KELP rock 'n' roll disc jockey is survived by his wife of 54 years, Drewlene, whom he met at Hot Springs High School in Truth or Consequences, N.M.

He also is survived by son Charlie Jr. "Chuck" Russell of Ellendale, N.D., and daughter Debbie Russell of Denver.

Russell had 10 grandchildren.

Funeral services are pending.

A tribute concert is being planned for 6 p.m. March 7 at the Dallas Nights Country Saloon, 1840 Lee Trevino.

Many of the musicians with whom he performed over the years are expected to participate, according to Jerry M. Shapiro of the duo Sweetwater, who has backed Russell frequently.
